History of Sustainable Finance

Aaron Franklin

Chapter Chapter 1 in Structuring Sustainable Finance Transactions, 2025, pp 3-13 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Sustainable finance is incredibly young compared to most aspects of finance, with the preponderance of activity taking place 2020 and beyond. This section will discuss the origins of sustainable finance, starting with the first green bond in 2007 through foundational moments such as the launch of the Green Bond Principles in 2014, the first sustainability-linked loans and first sustainability-linked bond in 2017 and 2019, respectively, and the rapid increase in issuance volumes in the succeeding years. This history is replete with efforts to create voluntary governance and proliferation of marketing labels.
