Chapter Chapter 1 in Whistleblowing Policy and Practice, Volume II, 2025, pp 1-12 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Why compile a state-of-the-research book (or two) on whistleblowing now? Is it because it has been over a decade since scholars last took stock of what we know and where the field is headed (Brown et al., International Handbook on Whistleblowing Research, Edward Elgar, 2014), making this an opportune moment to reassess and chart the future? Certainly, the landscape of whistleblowing has evolved dramatically in the past ten years. The EUEuropean Union (EU) Whistleblower Protection Directive, adopted in October 2019, set a significant milestone for member states to transpose the directive into national legislationlegislation with its deadline of December 17, 2021. This marked a watershed moment in institutionalizing protections for those who speak out against wrongdoing. Similarly, empirical research has advanced, exemplified by the comprehensive Whistle While They Work 2 studyWhistle While They Work 2 study in AustraliaAustralia (2016), which delivered wide-ranging insights into whistleblowing processesprocess”, including organizational responsesresponses and culturalcultural dynamics.
