Chapter Chapter 2 in Artificial Intelligence for Logistics 5.0, 2025, pp 17-52 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the evolution of logistics from its beginnings (Logistics 1.0) to the emerging Logistics 5.0. The evolution reflects the industrial revolutions, with innovative technologies and approaches used at each stage to meet changing market demands. AI characterizes Logistics 5.0 as a transformative technology with three key pillars: human-centricity, sustainability, and resilience. Humans are at the center of the development of systems that focus on the needs of people, whether they are customers or operators. Sustainability focuses on reducing environmental impact through initiatives such as reverse logistics and circular economy principles [Montes-Pineda & Garrido-Yserte, Artificial intelligence and business transformation: Impact in HR management, innovation and solutions challenges (pp. 41–59). Springer Nature. https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-031-58704-7_3 (2024)]. Resilience refers to maintaining operations despite disruption, which is particularly important given recent global supply chain challenges. The chapter describes the evolution of logistics service providers from first-party logistics (1PL) to fifth-party logistics (5PL), with each tier offering increasingly integrated and sophisticated services [Denholm, The definition of and differences between 1PL and 5PL. Good Logistics. Retrieved December 30, 2024, from https://goodlogisticsgroup.com/definition-of-and-differences-between-1pl-2pl-3pl-4pl-5pl/ (2022)]. Digital technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), blockchain, and robotics, primarily drive transformation [Koh et al., International Journal of Production Research, 58(7), 2054–2062. https://doi.org/10.1080/00207543.2020.1736428 (2020); Nicoletti & Appolloni, European Journal of Innovation Management, 27(9), 542–561. https://doi.org/10.1108/EJIM-07-2024-0787 (2024)]. These innovations are changing logistics organizations’ operations, enabling real-time monitoring, greater efficiency, and improved customer service. Organizations face challenges in implementing these solutions, such as resistance to change, a lack of qualified personnel, and concerns about data security. Successful logistics transformation requires strong leadership, a customer-centric culture, and aligning business and solutions strategies.
