Chapter Chapter 4 in The Economics of MotoGP, 2025, pp 51-77 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract In this chapter, we will discuss several aspects of demand and supply that interact in the MotoGP universe. We especially consider the labour demand and supply of drivers, as well as the demand and supply of audiences and financing. We discuss the contracts’ complex paragraphs as well as the precariousness of the riders’ side. This precariousness, in a more detailed economic reflection, is a consequence of the atomicity that characterises the riders’ side concerning the monopolistic (at least, oligopolistic) status of the contracting teams. We also study the dynamics of driver transfers between teams, especially over the last two decades. There, we confirm the central role of some of the factory teams, but also the importance of satellite teams as spaces of great dynamism observed in the transfer network.
