Abstract:
Abstract The Play Fair at the Olympics CampaignPlay Fairat the Olympics Campaign (PFOC) was a transnational anti-sweatshop initiative active from 2003 to 2011, addressing labour abuses in outsourced clothing and sportswear productionproduction. The campaign culminated in the Freedom of Association ProtocolFreedom of Association Protocol (FoAPFreedom of Association Protocol) in IndonesiaIndonesia, an agreement ensuring union rights and protection against intimidation. While the PFOC achieved partial successsuccess, as it tackled one of the demandsdemand of the campaigningcampaigning coalition, it fell short of its broader objectives, including the regional expansion of the agreement and tackling critical issues like living wageswages and employment security. This chapter analyses the campaign's limited scope of outcomesoutcome through the lens of Nonviolent Action (NVA) theorytheory. The focus on reputational pressurepressure and naming and shamingnaming and shaming left key corporate dependencies, such as supplysupply chainsupplychain reliance, unchallenged. Additionally, the avoidance of disruptivedisruptive tacticstactics like strikes or boycotts constrained the campaign’s potential. The chapter critiques the campaign’s strategies and offers lessons for future anti-corporate activismanti-corporateactivism, emphasising theactivism need to combine reputational and disruptive approaches to erode corporate powercorporatepower more effectively.
