Abstract: Abstract This chapter begins by analysing the potential impact of the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement on greenhouse gas emissions. Secondly, the chapter suggests ways in which a potential increase in CO2 emissions can be traded through a carbon market mechanism. The quantitative part of the work is based on a panel data analysis of 42 African countries over the period 1995–2022. The qualitative part, which involved describing the market mechanisms that would enable CO2 emissions to be traded on a market, was based on a literature review. The analysis shows that AfCFTA has a potentially positive effect on CO2 emissions in Africa. The chapter concludes with some policy recommendations.
