Chapter Chapter 12 in Sustainable Urban Development in Southern Africa, 2026, pp 283-295 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Resilient urban futures in Southern Africa depend on addressing structural drivers of vulnerability while leveraging local innovation and global frameworks. This concluding chapter synthesises the book’s findings, identifying critical pathways for transformation: integrated policy frameworks, resilient infrastructure investment, spatial justice in land use, institutional reform, and community-led governance. Research priorities include hazard mapping, climate modelling, and financing innovations. Policy recommendations stress the need to mainstream DRR, strengthen municipal capacity, invest in inclusive infrastructure, and foster regional collaboration. The chapter positions resilience as a developmental necessity and an opportunity for transformative change in Southern Africa’s cities.
