Chapter 4 in Vietnam's Economic Leap, 2025, pp 59-114 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Exports have been a major driver of Vietnam’s economic success, particularly in textiles and electronics. Using the Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) framework, this chapter classifies Vietnam’s exports into four categories: Classics (established exports), Emerging Champions (recently competitive products), Disappearing Exports (previously strong but now declining), and Marginals (low competitiveness). While Vietnam has successfully diversified its export basket, its exports remain concentrated in low-wage, labor-intensive industries with limited technological content and domestic value addition. Much of Vietnam’s high-tech exports involve assembly operations using imported components, highlighting the need to move up the value chain by fostering domestic industrial capabilities and strengthening linkages between FDI firms and local enterprises.
