Chapter Chapter 14 in Financial Social Media, 2026, pp 257-270 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract In early 2021, financial markets witnessed an extraordinary event that rattled Wall Street and drew global attention. A community of retail traders on the Reddit platform WallStreetBets (WSB hereafter) collectively participated in an aggressive wave of buying that propelled GameStop (GME) shares from roughly $20 to nearly $400 within weeks. This surge triggered one of the most dramatic short squeezes in Wall Street history, blindsiding professional hedge funds and igniting widespread debate over the shifting balance of power in contemporary trading.
