Chapter 4 in Entrepreneurship and Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) in Africa, 2026, pp 77-92 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This study examines the impact of technology adoption on the financial performance of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) in Ghana, with a specific focus on the challenges and opportunities presented by digitization. Data were collected from 312 SMEs in the Greater Accra region in 2023 using a mixed-methods approach, comprising surveys and regression analysis. The results show that mobile payments and mobile money systems are the most widely adopted technologies, while cloud storage, CRM systems, and accounting software have lower adoption rates due to cost, skill gaps, and resistance to change. The regression analysis reveals that factors such as technology adoption, technical skills, access to support, infrastructure, and credit access significantly impact financial performance. Key challenges include high costs, unreliable Internet, and insufficient technical expertise. The study recommends that, to improve adoption and performance, policymakers and SME owners should focus on reducing costs, improving training, and enhancing Internet connectivity. This study directly addresses the problem of how technology adoption affects the financial performance of SMEs in Ghana.
