A chapter in Competence Management in Museums, 2026, pp 7-26 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter outlines significant changes driving new competence requirements in the museum sector. Museums as object-based knowledge institutions face global trends that affect most of their activities, including the digital revolution, demographic changes, a changing political and policy context and organisational contingencies. The global trends cause museum stakeholders to demand more diverse services from museums, something which in turn generates a need for new museum competence. The new competence areas which museums today need to develop include communication with audiences, finance, management and collaboration. The chapter concludes that museums, due to the environmental trends and competence challenges, increasingly adopt a hybridisation strategy to manage the organisational pressure these cause.
