A chapter in Competence Management in Museums, 2026, pp 27-46 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The chapter introduces key concepts and presents the theoretical framework of the book. Competence is defined and compared to other concepts used by researchers relating to change in organisations, particularly in knowledge-intensive ones. Competence is also related to organisational development as a strategy to achieve organisational goals. Given the diverse demands on museums and their limited financial resources, competence management and development are central strategies alongside organisational development to secure societal relevance. Competence management, development and provision as organisational practices are described, and their role in strategy work and organisational development is explored. The chapter outlines the competence-based management approach to organisational development and the usefulness of such an approach in concrete development work at museums.
