Different Types of Fraud and Their Impact
Abdelrahim Al Aqqad
Chapter Chapter 2 in Fraud Analytics in Action, 2026, pp 15-36 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter examines major types of fraud and their impact across financial, organizational, and digital environments. It introduces broad fraud categories and practical examples, then explores the rise of digital fraud, including identity theft, phishing, account takeover, payment fraud, and synthetic identity fraud. The chapter also analyzes fraudster traits, tactics, and archetypes, distinguishing among opportunistic offenders, insiders, organized fraud actors, and cybercriminals. In addition, it discusses modern technologies used to combat fraud, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, blockchain, biometric verification, multi-factor authentication, tokenization, and behavioral analytics. By combining fraud typologies, behavioral insights, and technological responses, this chapter provides a practical foundation for understanding how fraud operates and how organizations can strengthen detection and prevention in increasingly digital environments.
