Abstract: Abstract Totally disconnected, locally compact (t.d.l.c.) groups, which lie at the forefront of current research, form a class of topological groups. The topology means that computations can only be done approximately, although when the output is discrete an exact answer may be found. Computation is also important for exploration and for the cataloging of examples. We survey various approaches of how to compute with t.d.l.c. groups, what to compute about them, and why.
