Chapter 1 in Family Business, Socio-Emotional Wealth, and CSR, 2026, pp 1-44 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract In this chapter, a brief overview of family businesses is provided. Various attempts to define this type of business and to identify the characteristics that make family businesses unique are considered. Their longevity and resilience, for example, are explored through some of the most recent contributions in the literature. Family involvement in the enterprise is what makes family businesses different. The three main representative constructs of family involvement, namely, socio-emotional wealth, family essence, and familiness, are discussed. The chapter concludes with an overview of recent advances in family business research, and possible topics for future research are also considered.
