Chapter 1 in A Business History of the Trade Book Publishing Industry in the U.S, 2026, pp 3-41 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter analyzed the trade books that are written and published for the consumer reading public in the U.S. They are comprised of four principal categories: adult hardcover and paperback versions; juvenile/young adult (YA) hardcover and paperback books; mass market (i.e., rack sized) paperbacks; and religious hardcover and paperback titles. The major trade book publishing firms, known as the “Big 5” dominate role this sector, although an important number of independent publishers play a substantive role in trade book publishing. In addition, important business strategies utilized by the “Big” 5 and the independents were analyzed.
