Chapter 4 in A Business History of the Trade Book Publishing Industry in the U.S, 2026, pp 119-162 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter describes the plight of unpublished authors in finding an agent willing to represent the author to a publishing house’s editor. The role of the agent is outlined in some detail, and the editor’s evaluation of the author’s book, and potential profit and loss (P & L) analysis, is presented. Once the editor is convinced of the merits and financial viability of the book, an author-publishing agreement (contract) is offered to the agent. A sample agreement, with an analysis of the terms and conditions of the agreement, is presented.
