Chapter 7 in A Business History of the Trade Book Publishing Industry in the U.S, 2026, pp 213-246 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The one-time cozy and, at times, an idealized world of trade book publishing was upended by a series of seismic demographic and economic changes as well as coping with a series of important mergers and acquisitions challenges. This chapter describes the pressing need of the “Big” 5 and independent publishers of all sizes: to acquire and understand relevant demographic and economic data; and to understand the potential impact that certain mergers and acquisitions could have on their business models.
