Chapter 9 in Technology, Management, and Design for Social Justice, 2026, pp 193-217 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter explores the role of technology in advancing environmental justice through ocean health data initiatives, focusing on the Cornwall Coastal Resilience project and the CHARTr Platform. It examines how centralized, accessible data systems can empower marginalized communities disproportionately impacted by environmental harm by making critical information more usable and inclusive. Guided by systems thinking and transition design, the chapter emphasizes a community-centered, ethical approach to technological innovation. It highlights how iterative, participatory development—driven by stakeholder feedback—bridges innovation and equity, addressing challenges of data governance and sustainability. Ultimately, CHARTr demonstrates that transparent and community-driven technology can cultivate resilience, redistribute power, and align green innovation with social and environmental justice in vulnerable coastal ecosystems.
