Abstract: Abstract This chapter addresses the concept of resilience in the context of global value chains (GVCs), emphasizing its heightened relevance because of recent global disruptions. The chapter highlights the existing theoretical overlap and distinctions between resilience and related concepts like robustness, flexibility, agility, and adaptability, drawing from both international business (IB) and supply chain management (SCM) literatures. Additionally, the chapter conceptualizes resilience as a dynamic, multi-phase process, encompassing anticipation, response, adaptation, and recovery or continuity, and stresses the importance of multidisciplinary approaches to fully understand resilience in GVCs. The chapter proposes a comprehensive definition of GVC resilience, focusing on the capacity of multinational enterprises (MNEs) to maintain or recover control over operations and performance by strategically managing governance, geographical configuration, product portfolios, and technological adoption. Finally, the chapter reviews measurement scales to understand resilience at the GVC level, underscoring the necessity for integration of diverse disciplinary insights to address complex global challenges.
