Chapter Chapter 3 in Rethinking Global Value Chains for Resilience in a Turbulent World, 2026, pp 41-64 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter examines the resilience of global value chains (GVCs) through an actor-centric perspective that moves beyond traditional, multinational enterprise-centric interpretations. Drawing on recent developments in international business and global production network theory, it argues that resilience is not a unilateral outcome of multinational enterprise (MNE) strategy but a co-produced capability emerging from the interdependence of multiple actors, including suppliers, institutions, and non-state organizations. By revisiting the evolution of GVC governance and incorporating relational and institutional dimensions, the chapter argues that the capacity of GVCs to anticipate, react to, and recover from disruptions depends on information flow coordination, mutual trust, and capability alignment across network tiers.
