Abstract:
Abstract Engineering design methods play a crucial role in both academia and industry, offering systematic solutions for complex challenges and enabling efficient product and system development. While commonly used in large companies, their adoption in small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) is hindered by resource constraints, knowledge gaps, and structural challenges. Despite these barriers, these methods hold significant potential for driving sustainable transformation in SMEs. This chapter explores the integration of design methods like VDI 2221 and Axiomatic Design into SMEs, emphasizing their capacity to enhance efficiency, adaptability, and interdisciplinary collaboration. It highlights the unique needs of SMEs, calling for customization to address their specific operational and structural realities, as well as the versatile roles of their designers. The chapter concludes with a framework for making these methods accessible to SMEs through tailored training programs and course structures. These initiatives aim to bridge the gap between theoretical approaches and practical application, empowering SMEs to effectively adopt and leverage engineering design methods for innovation and growth.
