Abstract: Abstract ChatGPT is a powerful assistant for mathematical writing. It is also a useful assistant for exploration, computations, drafting proofs, generating examples, drawing diagrams, and analyzing definitions. But a language model is not a mathematician. ChatGPT predicts the next token. It does not manipulate structures, verify implications, discover the hidden reason why a theorem is true. In this chapter, I describe the fundamental limitations of ChatGPT in mathematics. I also describe how to work safely within those limits.
