Chapter Chapter 3 in Institutional Economics and Immigrant Integration, 2026, pp 43-72 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter analyses cultural distance in immigrant integration through the lens of institutional economics, emphasizing informal institutions as culture. It explores how divergent norms, values, and preferences create integration friction, shaping labour market participation, trust, and social cohesion. Drawing on Huntington’s civilizational theory, Hofstede’s cultural dimensions, and the Inglehart-Welzel cultural map, the chapter evaluates their strengths and limitations in conceptualizing and measuring cultural distance. It argues that these frameworks provide essential tools for explaining persistent integration challenges across generations, highlighting the need for more precise, multidimensional approaches that connect cultural variation to practical integration outcomes and policy relevance.
