A chapter in Proceedings of the International Congress of Mathematicians, 1995, pp 1133-1144 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The problems discussed in this paper have the following common theme. An, in time t, evolving, in time t, order parameter that, depending on the specific context, describes the different phases of a material or the total (averaged) magnetization of a stochastic system or the temperature of a reacting-diffusing system, etc., approaches, typically as t →∞, the equilibrium states of certain systems. Depending on the values of a threshold parameter, such systems either have a unique or more than one equilibrium state. The existence of multiple equilibrium states can be associated to phase transitions.
