Abstract:
Abstract An important progress made in the study of fluid turbulence in the last decades is a clearer understanding of the differences between the two- and three-dimensional cases. The most striking feature of 2D turbulence is the emergence of a large–scale organization of the flow (leading to structures usually called coherent structures), while the energy is conserved. By contrast, in the 3D case energy dissipation actually occurs, and the main experimental observations are the power-law energy spectrum and intermittency effects (the dissipation of energy does not seem to occur homogeneously in space).
