Abstract: Abstract In this short chapter we give a brief introduction to the beautiful theory of cyclotomic units, which can be viewed as a “real analogue” of Stickelberger’s ideal. In particular, we prove that the index of the group of cyclotomic units in the group of all units is finite and equal to the real class number.
