Chapter Chapter 4 in MVT: A Most Valuable Theorem, 2017, pp 445-483 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract In the 1980s, in what appears to have been an American phenomenon, a number of attempts were made to remove the Mean Value Theorem from the introductory course in the Calculus and replace it by a “more intuitive principle”. The history of this movement is presented, hammering in the final nail of its coffin. An additional section on the constructive content of the Mean Value Theorem has been added to soften the blow to the losers advocating replacement of the Mean Value Theorem.
