Abstract:
Abstract Generalization has been an often-pursued goal in mathematics. We can define it as the process of introducing new systems and operations in order to extend the domains of existing systems and operations consistently, while still preserving as many prior results as possible. In this chapter, we look into the question of how to generalize discrete finite sums and products from the set of integers into the entire complex plane, which give rise to the notion of fractional finite sums. We discuss the history of this problem in this chapter, describe the contributions of this book, and sketch an outline to the remainder of the chapters.
