A chapter in Handbook of Epidemiology, 2005, pp 1-40 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Various disciplines contribute to the investigation of determinants of human health and disease, to the improvement of health care, and to the prevention of illness. These contributing disciplines stem from three major scientific areas, first from basic biomedical sciences such as biology, physiology, biochemistry, molecular genetics, and pathology, second from clinical sciences such as oncology, gynecology, orthopedics, obstetrics, cardiology, internal medicine, urology, radiology, and pharmacology, and third from public health sciences with epidemiology as their core.
