Chapter I.12 in Handbook of Epidemiology, 2005, pp 463-501 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter deals with practical issues in designing and planning analytical epidemiological studies. Although most of the practical issues are consequences of the theoretical principles of epidemiology as presented in standard textbooks (Breslow and Day 1981, 1987; Rothman and Greenland 1998; Miettinen 1985) and in Chaps. I. 1, I. 5, I. 6, I. 9, II. 1, II. 5, and II. 6 of this handbook, the emphasis here is on how to proceed practically when planning a study.
