A chapter in Current Trends in High Performance Computing and Its Applications, 2005, pp 593-597 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract A sort-last parallel volume Splatting algorithm based on commodity PC clusters, which integrates hybrid data-space and image-space partitioning schemes, is proposed in this paper. Under the sort-last strategy, sorting is deferred until the end of the rendering pipeline. The approach also adopts a divide-and-conquer strategy and an object-order data decomposition scheme to distribute the volume among nodes in the PC clusters. The proposed method has excellent features including high scalability, predictable communication patterns and load balance in the rendering of large scale volume data sets on commercial PC clusters which have no high-end graphics adaptors equipped.
