Abstract:
Abstract This chapter gives an overview of the fundamentals of gas storage and explains the importance of gas storage facilities for the European market. Taking into account the current gas market development, the strategic relevance of using storage becomes an increasingly significant issue for gas market players. Storage provides security of supply and flexibility. Both are essential to reliable and sustainable success in the European gas market. Access to storage facilities generates competitive advantage through physical and commercial portfolio optimisation, which in turn has a positive effect on the efficiency of the gas market as a whole. To provide sufficient storage capacity for the European gas market, a stable political and regulatory framework is required to encourage the investments needed.
