Abstract: Summary The Lyα line is a prominent emission line of many high-redshift galaxies. These young galaxies are supposed to be very irregular. Starbursts or relativistic jets emerging from central compact objects are able to compress the gaseous material to huge high-density shells, which expand, merge and eventually fragment. The finite element method is an appropriate tool to study resonance lines in such an environment, where strong density gradients occur. Recent results are discussed for the shell model and its application to individual high-redshift galaxies.
