Abstract: Abstract Dans ce chapitre est décrit le cadre dans lequel se déroule le début de cette histoire: le probléme posé pour le Grand Prix des sciences mathématiques, le contexte historique en mathématiques et le contexte historique général, c´està–dire la premiére guerre mondiale. Aprés une rapide présentation des divers protagonistes et de leur rÛle sont posées quelques notations et donnés les premiers exemples pertinents pour le probléme mathématique étudié, l´itération des fractions rationnelles, pour le situer, tel qu´il était au moment oé l´histoire a commencé.
