Chapter 2 in Super-Flexibility for Knowledge Enterprises, 2010, pp 15-41 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Flexibility is often invoked as a panacea for operating in dynamic contexts. We define it as the “propensity to adapt, at times spontaneously, to fluid conditions”. In practice, it is a means of enacting swift changes and making sudden turns in order to harness new opportunities and address challenging situations. Examples include rapid acceleration (such as in entering new markets, deploying new technologies, and making acquisitions), immediate disengagement (from an unattractive market), applying brakes in an emergency (such as in a financial crisis), and deploying shock absorbers (for example in dealing with hostile takeovers).
