Chapter Chapter 4 in Networks in Aviation, 2010, pp 65-82 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Optimum asset utilization is vital for airlines and airports alike. The productivity of the assets deployed is at least as important as commercial objectives like connectivity. Certain schedule characteristics are more likely to facilitate high utilization of resources, while others are more likely to reduce it. Regardless of the various hub structure tactics—peaked, de-peaked, waved, rolling, or random—infrastructural constraints can significantly impact efficient asset utilization. One of the most severe infrastructural constraints is the opening hours of airports. Efforts to build time buffers into airline timetables to increase operational stability are likely to impose additional constraints to efficient asset utilization.
