Abstract: Abstract An immune correlate of protection is an immunological assay (either humoral or cellular) that predicts protection against infection or disease. Correlates of protection are of great importance because they can be used as surrogate endpoints for vaccine efficacy in clinical vaccine trials. Immunological vaccine trials are much less costly and much less time-consuming than field efficacy trials. Correlates of protection constitute the scientific basis for improving existing vaccines and introducing new ones. Under certain conditions, they can be used to predict vaccine efficacy in populations other than the one in which efficacy was demonstrated. For these reasons, finding correlates of protection is one of the 14 Grand Challenges of Global Health of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
