Abstract: Abstract We present a novel quantum treatment of highly excited alkali Rydberg states strongly driven by a coherent microwave field. Our approach allows realistic numerical experiments on various species of driven alkali atoms under laboratory conditions, and we apply it to lithium Rydberg atoms. We observe an unambiguous transition of the ionisation threshold from the regime of near-adiabatic driving into the domain of dynamical localisation. Thus, we establish the missing link between (laboratory) experiments on atomic hydrogen and various alkali atoms.
