Abstract What do a Mercedes-Benz and a 1000-year old piece of pottery have in common? Not much at first sight — yet there is the common issue of shape. A car’s appearance is judged by the flow of its curves; a vase is judged by — exactly the same thing ! Either shape may be ugly or beautiful; but how do we decide?
