Abstract: Abstract The numerical simulation of the flow in unsaturated porous media is the focus of this paper. We summarise briefly some results concerning the modelling of the flow in porous media. Different schemes for the approximation of the time-derivative are compared. An adaptive grid refinement and coarsening strategy, which is based on a nested iteration, is introduced. Due to the heterogeneity of the considered porous media, the efficiency of the standard multi-grid algorithms deteriorates for the linear systems which arise from the discretisation and linearisation of the model equations. In order to overcome these difficulties, the Schur-complement multi-grid method has been developed. In the end of the paper, a few simulation results are presented.
