A chapter in Mathematik Schlüsseltechnologie für die Zukunft, 1997, pp 525-536 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The paper deals with automated design of engineering structures. A mathematical model for maximum stiffness truss designs is briefly outlined. This model is first treated by an approach leading to a non-convex large-scaled optimization problem. It is shown how this can be rewritten as a convex problem. The second approach is based on non-smooth optimization techniques. We close with a brief introduction to the optimization of continuum structures. In this case the question of optimal material dominates the design problem. Discretizing the model we end up with optimization problems similar to the truss situation considered first. Several numerical examples support our claim of effectivity of the approaches pre sented.
