Realism as a Philosophy of Mathematics

Stephen F. Barker

A chapter in Foundations of Mathematics, 1969, pp 1-9 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Kurt Ködel’s great contributions to mathematical logic are highly technical in nature, and it is controversial what their philosophical implications are. It is therefore of some interest to consider a viewpoint concerning the philosophy of mathematics that Gödel himself adopted. This viewpoint must to some degree embody his own estimate of the philosophical significance of his work. Naturally, the opinion of any profound thinker regarding the philosophy of his subject merits attention; but this is especially true when, as in Gödel’s case, his own work may have philosophical implications of great importance yet which are difficult to assess.
