Introduction: The Trade-Off

Chapter 1 in Ambidextrous Leadership, 2022, pp 1-17 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Evolution or revolution? Today companies all over the world face an unprecedented trade-off between today’s core business and future business opportunities. They must improve their products and services dramatically to remain competitive in global markets and fierce price wars. At the same time, against the background of digitalization and artificial intelligence, they must shape the future with radically new ideas to keep the organization viable for a long time. While evolution pays the salaries, revolution must guarantee future success. And both worlds must also increasingly stand completely unpredictable crises. Moving constantly in diametrically opposed worlds is a balancing act that requires utmost flexibility and adaptability from organizations and the people who work in them. Corporate success today requires that you master both: evolution and revolution. Leadership today means orchestrating both present and future and driving both worlds in a similar manner.
