Weightless Stress Tensor Fields with Boundary Conditions

Chapter 7 in Stresses in glaciers, 2022, pp 49-60 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract In this chapter the “weightless stress tensor fields” with given boundary stresses are constructed by selecting among all “weightless stress tensor fields” those which have these boundary stresses. Since the “weightless stress tensor fields” are given as second derivatives of arbitrary matrix fields (stress functions), this selection is made by identifying suitable stress functions. This identification is done by boundary conditions for the boundary values of the stress functions and their first derivatives. If the boundary surface on which the boundary stresses are given contains a not simply connected part, then the part of the closed boundary of the glacier area under consideration on which no boundary stresses are given consists of several connected parts. The unknown forces and torques on these parts – except one of them – appear as parameters in the general solution.
