Abstract: Riassunto Virianto, si dice, nell’età dell’algebra e delle teoria astratte assiomatiche. Ma uno dei concetti matematici più importante — il concetto di funzioue —non è stato nè « algebrizzato » nè assiomatizzato. Coaì come nelle definizioani astratte di gruppo e di corpo gli algebristi pongono assiomi corrispondenti a qualche proprietà essenziale dei numeri, in questa Conferenza mi propongo di precisare talune proprietà essenziali di funzioni reali, e di scegliere qualcuna fra esse che possa servire come fondamento di una teoria astratta — un’algebra di funzioni.
