Abstract: Abstract This paper reports on a series of research projects in the grocery, clothing and other non-food sectors of British retailing on the topical issue of on-shelf availability (OSA) and out-of-stocks (OOS). Most research on OOS and OSA has focused upon the grocery sector, and the two projects reported here investigated one grocery retailer’s efforts to improve OSA and reduce OOS and the trade-offs found at another grocery retailer between on-shelf availability and profitability of a major, perishable food category in the context of substitutability and consumer loyalty. The other two research projects were more exploratory in nature in that little published research has previously been carried out on OSA/OOS in the non-food sector. Firstly, research on a promotional campaign by a major clothing retailer to achieve 100% OSA in a specific children’s wear category is reported prior to discussing a more general survey of management in a variety of non-food sectors.
