Abstract:
Summary The International TIMSS Study: Third International Mathematics and Science Study revealed large gender differences in Mathematics achievement (Beaton et al.,1996). The present analysis undertaken at the Danish TIMSS data from grade 6,7 demonstrates that six math items, which were used as a common reference set for eight TIMSS booklets distributed among students, are not meeting the intended psychometric requirements set by the Rasch model. Could such item inhomogeneities create TIMSS gender differences in the first place? The paper provides alternative analyses of gender differences based on other statistics and measures than provided by the international math scores.
