Abstract: Summary In this paper, Mindlin plate theory is extended to cater for curved shell structures. It can be considered as Mindlin type shell theory. From this theory, the C(0) continunity formulation of shell elements could be derived directly. The shear and membrane locking behaviour in degenerated shell elements is investigated and may be avoided by the assumed strain approach.
