Chapter 4 in Geophysical Interpretation using Integral Equations, 1992, pp 94-101 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract A fundamental feature of Maxwell’s equations is their symmetry in relation to the electric and magnetic fields. Therefore, the static magnetic field problem, in the absence of currents, is formally analogous to the electrical field problem. Owing to this analogy, the sources of anomalous magnetic fields can be represented by magnetic pole distributions. Since physically real magnetic monopoles have not been found, they should be regarded merely as equivalent sources.
